Italy - travel destination of German artists

Influenced by Goethe's Italian Journey German artists travelled to Italy in the 19th century, searching for the remains of Classical Antiquity in the Romantic Era, or, in the second half of the century, finding new Naturalist themes and lighting effects.

As examples, we show paintings and drawings by Martin v. Rohden, Carl Morgenstern, Arthur Blaschnik, Friedrich Eisenlohr, Friedrich Eugen Peipers, Adolf Hoeffler and Gustav Schönleber.
